It's been a while since I've read a Dresden Files novel, so I am fuzzy on the details before I begin 'Ghost Story', the latest instalment of the wildly successful urban fantasy series. Sufficed to say, I see there being a continuum between vibes-based connections unique to the wizard, and specific energies in place anchoring two locations together so that anyone trying to get into the castle via the NeverNever must pass through the defences, like in Ghost Story or Lea's own handiwork.Summary: Funny, entertaining and surprisingly thoughtful – just make sure you've read the other books in the series first. *I have Opinions on the nature of connections between the NeverNever and the mortal world, but that's a separate post. Plus this is the kind of thing he's good at: heavy lifting, work that involves a lot of patience and attention and care, and it seems to me there are notable though superficial similarities between the kind of thaumaturgy and managing energy flows involved in Little Chicago and creating your own demesne. While it might be a little early for him to do something so fancy, Bob, some lessons, and the castle itself might give him an edge. Thirdly, Dresden is (hopefully, hopefully), finally putting some work into his technical skill and taking some lessons from his elders. Secondly, there's an old WOJ out there about the senior council all having their own private retreats in the NeverNever it seems like a standard, if advanced, tactic. Since the old apartment burned down, the magic connecting Lea's garden to his house is almost certainly defunct, especially since when Marcone moved families and a castle into the ruins, the space would no longer fit the vibe of a nondescript and peaceful place that housed a deadly creature surrounded by the ruins of those that thought to challenge it.

But I also think he's building his own demesne on the NeverNever side. Now there are obvious reasons for him to be searching for some inner stability, and that might be part of it. Bob is managing a suite of wards, Dresden seems to have done something to nix most hostile illusions and veils around the area, and apparently he's been doing a lot of meditation. In the short stories post Battle Grounds there's been some mention of Dresden doing a lot of work with the castle and its defenses.
